January Home Tips
What to do this month: During the coldest of winter months, it is important that any vulnerable plants be protected from the harsh air and freezing temperatures. These plants must be sheltered from the hard freezes and the winter precipitation.
Cover the plants with plastic or tarps to block the wind and insulate any perennials and bulbs. Mulch, straw, and even compost will work as a strong insulator to protect your outdoor plants for the winter. Remove any heavy snow from any shrubs.
Potted plants need to be moved to a protected location or planted. Stone, clay, and terra cotta pots will likely shatter if left outside during the winter months. Therefore, move your potted plants to cool, dark locations that remain between 40 and 50 degrees where they will go dormant during the winter months. Water only once and leave them until the weather warms again and they can be moved back outdoors.
Now is the time to start planning your plants for the spring. Prime planting season in February and March is just around the corner, and you should begin looking at landscape ideas now. Contact the Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping Design Team to begin planning now.
February Home Tips
What to do this month: Spring is on the horizon and our minds often drift toward the thoughts of colorful flowers and plants that will fill our lawns. However, there are a variety of options to maintain color throughout the white wintry season.
Fruit bearing plants offer a wide variety of color during the winter months and attract an array of wildlife. Crabapple trees, black chokeberry, cranberry bushes, and junipers offer birds and wildlife winter nourishment and will keep your majestic view full of lively activity throughout the winter months.
Now is the time to plant seeds indoors that need 10-12 weeks before they are ready for transplanting. The gestation period of seeds vary, but now is a good time to begin taking the first step toward re-flourishing that dream garden for the spring.
Keep an eye out for egg masses of the gypsy moth. Destroy these masses if you find them because the gypsy moth will wreck havoc on your beautiful landscaping. These eggs withstand even the harshest of conditions and when they emerge in the spring the caterpillar will continually feed on trees and shrubs from mid-June to early July where tree damage ranges from light to practically complete defoliation and leave trees vulnerable to disease and insect infestation.
Winter causes plant damage and is hard on your trees. The snow and ice can cause tree limbs to break and shrubs to wilt. Look for plant damage in your shrubbery and dead wood in your trees. Now is the time to prune trees that shed their leaves in the fall. Regenerative and formative pruning of some shrubs can now take place as well. Contact the Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping professional Maintenance Team for all of your winter pruning, trimming, and maintenance needs.
March Home Tips
What to do this month: As the ice begins to melt and the weather begins to warm it is time to direct your attention toward your lawn. Keeping your lawn weed-free can be a daunting task at the height of spring and summer and this is why it is so important to be proactive. Treat your lawn with a pre-emergent product to control weeds before they get out into the lawn and sprouting in your landscape beds. Pre-emergents will help your ground cover remain pristine and prepare your lawn for the upcoming seasonal re-growth. Grass killer can be used in the landscape beds to prevent grass from infiltrating your flower beds, but be cautious because it will kill your lawn if used haphazardly. Broadleaf weed control should also occur during the month of March. These weeds start growing in the fall and winter and will become thicker during the spring if not destroyed now. You should also cut back ornamental grasses at this time.
Aeration is an important process during this time as well. This is a vital process to maintaining the health of your lawn and will improve drainage. Core aeration will help prevent thatch buildup, allow proper nutrients to flow through the soil, and make for an ideal environment for grass seed to grow. A lime application is best completed during the fall months and we recommend a soil test before apply. You can schedule a soil test with a member of our Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping professional Maintenance Team.
Be aware that the last frost date for our area is usually during the middle of May, but you should be aware of your region’s final frost date. As frosts thaw it is important to be certain that any unprotected plants are properly mulched or insulated. Some plants do not need pruned during the spring, but be aware of the blooming pattern of the plant. Remove any protective wraps or plastic around younger trees to avoid insect infiltration and disease in the spring.
Winter clean-up and maintenance can be a taxing task, but luckily our full service crew is willing to help. Contact the Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping Maintenance Team to schedule spring clean-up for your lawn or business. Leaf collection, debris clean-up and removal, fertilizing, re-mulching, pruning, and trimming services are all available.
April Home Tips
What to do this month: Spring has arrived and it is time to get fully involved with your landscape maintenance and lawn care. April is the start of the spring gardening season and now is the time to make the most of your home or business lawn and landscape beds.
Now that your lawn has already been treated with pre-emergent weed control, it is time to apply the post emergents for dandelions, wild onions, and other weeds that have survived the winter. Now is the time to take care of those pesky dandelions before they cover the entire lawn and prepare your grass for optimal growing season. Ornamental grass should be cut back and bare spots in the lawn should be re-seeded or covered with fresh sod. Start taking care of your lawn early and help your grass make it through the heat of the summer.
Be selective in your pruning, but be sure to keep your shrubs properly trimmed to keep them healthy as they grow. Inspect the shrubs, plants, and trees for any wildlife damage and prune where needed. Now is the time to remove your winter mulch and compost. You should also take steps to prevent the germination of weeds in your landscape beds. New beds can be established at this time. This is also a good time to plant replacement shrubs and trees for those that have been lost over the winter season.
Now is the time to plant shrubs, trees, perennials, and annual seeds. Properly mulch your garden pathways and fertilize your flowerbeds. Contact the Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping Maintenance Team for your mulching, planting, and pruning needs.
May Home Tips
What to do this month: April showers bring May flowers so now is the time to make the most of the moist soil and make stellar flower beds. At this point, you should have already prepared your beds with pre-emergents to keep the weeds at bay. However, be certain that you are using the correct pre-emergents and following the labels to avoid a landscape bed catastrophe. Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping has an experienced horticulture team ready and willing to assist you. For help with properly treating your beds please contact our Maintenance Team.
Be sure to make sure your mulch is at the proper levels for the season. Be careful not to overly mulch trees and shrubs to stunt the growth of your landscape items. Also, do not over plant and saturate your beds with perennials to prevent rot and over rooting the soil.
Fertilizer is important during this month. This is a good time to apply fertilizer to accelerate growth and maintain the health of your plants. An application of granular sulfur may be necessary and your plants could really benefit from proper treatment.
As the mowing season is underway, it is important that your mower is properly maintained and the blade has been sharpened. Dull blades tear rather than cut the grass and this can result in bald patches and undergrowth in your lawn. The frayed or torn edges of the grass will leave your lawn with a browned appearance and leave your lawn looking less than desirable. At Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping, we have a highly trained team who consistently review and maintain our equipment to ensure that the mowing of your lawn will leave your neighbors envious.
June Home Tips
What to do this month: The summer is heating up. As the day’s sun becomes brighter and the rain becomes scarce those landscaping beds and that beautiful lawn are beginning to wither. Keep your lawn and shrubbery properly watered to maintain their health and luster. Generally, a lawn requires at least one inch of water per week. Watering in the morning is desirable because this will reduce the amount of water loss from evaporation. While some lawns and plants may require less, be sure to provide the plants with ample water to avoid a desperate search for water and instigating a battle of the fittest. Weeds require less water to grow and thus will flourish while your lawn and plants wilt.
Some planting and pruning can occur during this time, but be certain that you are properly watering the new and freshly cut plants to keep them healthy and vibrant. Now is actually a good time for larger projects because the dry ground will allow equipment and heavier items to be moved across the lawn without leaving trenches or tearing up your lawn. Now is also a good time to prune your evergreens and pines and nip your mums. This is also the best time to order spruces and pines from Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping to bring some year round foliage to your lawn and provide shade for years to come.
Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping offers installation and maintenance of irrigation systems to ensure that your lawn is getting the proper amount of water during these harsh months. Be sure to contact our Design Team for an appointment to discuss your irrigation possibilities.
July Home Tips
What to do this month: July is the time for summer, sunshine, and to spend the day on the water. While you are out basking in the sun, remember, your lawn is baking in it as well. We stress to our customers that landscaping is an investment that is infinitely rewarding, but with every investment constant maintenance and upkeep must be conducted. You should continue to water your plants and lawn as the rain is becoming increasingly scarce. Weak plants are inviting to insects and as they invade your withering plants they will continue to spread to the surrounding healthier plants.
Make sure that your mulch remains moist during this time as dry mulch repels water and leave the soil below dry and barren. Add fresh mulch to rose beds and watch for signs of blackspot fungus disease. You should continue pruning where necessary and shearing the hedges to foster new growth.
Unless you are consistently watering your lawn it has probably gone dormant by this time. If so, then it is important to mow your grass at longer intervals than the previous months. Keep your mower at the highest height setting and do not cut more than 1/3 of the total length of the grass blade. Now is also a good time to spread fertilizer on the lawn to keep it as vibrant and healthy as possible. Watch for signs of grub damage in the lawn as well.
If you are you unsure about the signs of disease and damage be sure to contact our Maintenance Team to schedule an appointment to treat and maintain your landscaping during the summer months.
August Home Tips
What to do this month: If July is the month of sunshine and fun, August is the month of steam and heat. This month is usually the driest of the year and that means that watering your lawn and landscaping is particularly important during this time. Do not forget to water your trees as some are more susceptible to death and damage during drought conditions than others. Trees may require deeper watering during this time to remain healthy and carry them through the drought conditions. Larger trees will require soaker hose perimeter that will allow soaking for several hours twice a week.
Now is not the time to prune trees and shrubs, but you should continue to dead-head flowers and cut back any hollyhocks after they have bloomed. If you are still struggling to keep your flower beds or vegetable garden healthy, it is best to rid your yard of these eye sores at this point. Perennials that look damaged may be cut back a few inches to encourage growth next year.
Now is also the time to re-evaluate your yard. You may want to add shrubs or alter the color scheme for next year. As the growing season has slowed, it is a good time to look at your yard and decide if you are content with the placement of your shrubs and flower beds. Beginning this month is a good time to seed a new lawn. If you want a healthy lawn for next season, it is best to get the seed in place between now and the middle of October.

September Home Tips
What to do this month: Fall has arrived and now is the time to consider what trees and shrubs will accent your home or business the best. As now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs, you should consider which types best suit your landscape vision. Perennials, vines, and ground covers are a good choice as this is the prime planting season for these plants. Trees and shrubs may also be planted for optimal growth. The cooler weather will allow for deep root growth while retaining adequate moisture.
This is also a good time to evaluate the growth of your lawn. Fresh seed can be placed now to prosper growth as the harsh heat retreats. Cover the new seeds with fertilizer and water to firmly plant the seeds. This is also a good time to aerate the lawn and remove any heavy thatch that has accumulated over the summer months. Continue watering and weeding your lawn. Another advantage of the cooler temperature is that weed growth will be suppressed, but grass growth is active. Now is the best time for your grass to overpower the weeds and take control of your lawn.
Now is also the time to pick up your fall flowers and annuals for your ornamental pots to accent your entryway. People often select flowers when in full bloom, however, this is typically the end of the flower’s lifecycle. Your mums and pansies should be chosen before they are in full bloom to last for the entire season. Stop by or contact our friendly Nursery Staff today to discuss our vibrant fall inventory. We can meet all of your planting needs from the smallest of potted mums to a large white ash. Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping is here for you!
October Home Tips
What to do this month: The view of the Ozarks in the fall is something to behold. The leaves are turning a wide array of colors and offering one of nature’s most brilliant shows. As the leaves begin to fall, they should be collected and added to a compost pile. Established trees and shrubs can be transplanted at this time if they have defoliated.
Continue to seed any bare spots or new lawns during this time, but only until the first frost. Seeding should be discontinued after the first frost. Winterizing fertilizer should also be spread across the lawn to give your grass strength for the winter months. Your grass is still growing at this point. Therefore, lawn care should still continue until the growth declines. Now is also a time to plant some tall grasses to decorate your lawn and give it full color throughout the seasons. These grasses come in a variety of colors, heights, and plumage; they make for a wonderful addition to an already established design.
All deadwood plants and dead perennials should be disposed of at this point. While insects are being reduced in number, rodents are evacuating the fields and wooded areas. Young trees are a delicacy to these creatures, so now is the time to protect their vulnerable trunks with plastic tree spirals.
While spring often gets the most attention for planting enthusiasts, fall is an equally important month for landscaping. Examine your current fall landscape design and make sure that you are getting the most from your fall foliage. There are a wide variety of fall plants that will accent your lawn and make your yard a visual delight. Stop by or contact our friendly Nursery Staff today to find our vibrant fall inventory.
While the falling leaves make for a wonderful sight that inspires visions of the warmth of the fall, the piles of leaves can become cumbersome. November Home Tips
What to do this month: November might be the time of turkey and football, but if you want your lawn to look its best for that family holiday gathering do not neglect it now. Continue to keep the lawn leaf free during this time. The fallen leaves make for a nesting home to insects, rodents, and disease while killing the grass underneath; not to mention they have become a bit of an eye sore! Failing to remove the leaves will result in making the soil acidic and requiring a lime treatment in the spring.
Continue aerating the lawn to avoid soil compaction and allow water and nutrients to reach the roots of the grass. November is also a good time for moss to grow. Leaving the grass to its own accord can result in a very fertile area for moss. Remove any leaves, weeds, and other debris to keep the lawn healthy. While the lawn is clear you should inspect for any signs of insect and diseases and treat where necessary.
Fertilize any deciduous and evergreen trees. Wrap the younger trees with protective cover and protect any roses with a rose collar for the winter. Mulch any perennial and bulb beds. This will help to protect them over the harsh winter months. Protect any woody plants that attract rabbits using chicken wire. Rabbits will wreak havoc over the coming months to any exposed woody plants left unprotected.
This is also a good time to clear your sprinkler system before the cold winter weather sets in. A busted sprinkler system from a frozen line can be an expensive mistake for the next season. It is best to avoid this by cleaning out the sprinkler system now. Winterize your irrigation system and turn it off before the freeze. This includes any hardscape elements, such as fountains and waterfalls. Submerge water lilies to prevent freezing and remove any tropical lilies. Inspect your patios, walkways, and retaining walls for uneven surfaces or cracks. Repair where necessary before the freeze sets in and causes more damage. December Home Tips
What to do this month: December has arrived and as the year comes to an end winter takes its firm grip on the Ozarks. As the snow begins to fall and cover your lawn you still have some landscaping options and responsibilities.
Prune trees where necessary and cut out any infected trees or limbs. The trees are dormant during this time, so it is a great time to begin shaping up those that give shade. Any snow buildup on trees and shrubs should be gently brushed away with a broom. Pay special attention to excessive snow buildup on evergreens and bushes as this can result in limb damage and eventually death of the plant.
Continue to remove any leaves, weeds, and debris from your lawn and planted areas. Piles of leaves will kill the grass and destroy landscape beds. This can be a good time for sodding to occur as the ground is dormant. The sod will appear browned and dead to the untrained eye. However, just as the grass in your lawn is dormant so is the sod. The brown will green for the spring and make for a wonderfully lush lawn.
It is also a good time to mark the edges of your lawn to avoid damaging it while shoveling or plowing. While it is every kid’s dream to run through the newly fallen snow, it is best to avoid walking on frost and snow covered lawns because it can cause damage that will need to be repaired for the spring. You should also clear walkways and patios of snow and ice. Select non-salt deicers as salt will damage the plants and seep into the soil as the frozen precipitation melts. The much needed water for the plants will also be reduced by the soil’s intake of salt.
Shoveling yourself out of the deep Ozarks snow can be a daunting process, but it does not need to be for you. Lake Home Nursery & Landscaping also provides snow removal for your driveway, walkways, and roadways all the while providing you the continued year-long maintenance service. Contact our Maintenance Team to schedule your snow removal and lawn winterizing.
